History of Asiatic JWT

All started with a young Dhaka University graduate on vacation walking into an advertisement agency in Karachi. The next thing he knows, he has been appointed as an English copywriter for East Asiatic in Dhaka.

Asiatic was born in Dhaka as East Asiatic, a part of Asiatic (now JWT), Karachi 15 March 1966

East Asiatic wins the first client – a Jute Mill

1968

Aly Zaker joins East Asiatic

1972

Aly Zaker starts leading the agency now taken over by Bengalis

1973

East Asiatic wins its oldest partner – Lever Brother (now Unilever)

Asiatic is affiliated with J Walter Thompson, the oldest and one of the largest advertising agencies on earth

1998

Asiatic becomes the first agency to have a strategic planning department, which started with J Walter Thompson.

Anandadhara was founded as a film industry magazine. Shahadat Chowdhury, editor of Bichitra, was the founding editor. The magazine started the Lux Anandadhara Miss Bangladesh Photogenic

Lux introduces Lux Anandadhara Miss Photogenic Bangladesh, the forerunner to the Lux Channel i Superstar, with Moushumi as their first winner

1998

Asiatic brands ICC Knock Out Tournament (Wills International Cup), the first One Day International cricket tournament apart from the World Cups to involve all test playing nations, held in Bangladesh.

Asiatic co-creates National Arsenic Mitigation Strategy with the government by developing a branding strategy now adopted worldwide — green and red marking of arsenic contaminated tube-wells

1999

Asiatic Social is born as the first social communication outfit in Bangladesh with Thompson Social

Nayantara starts producing Sisimpur

Asiatic co-creates National Early Childhood Development Strategy with the government and UNICEF

Asiatic starts operating in Afghanistan as the first Bangladeshi agency to run an overseas office, partnering with UNICEF and Afghan Ministry of Public Health, pioneering radio serials and comic books, before closed down when war broke out
